The Top 5 Herbal Anxiety Remedies

By Carl Crane

The Top 5 Herbal Anxiety RemediesThere are more people in the world now that are suffering from stress and anxiety. Herbal anxiety remedies can play a massive part in this potentially killer disease. The conventional treatment for stress and anxiety is prescription antidepressant but this comes along with some pretty nasty side effects. And it is for this reason more and more people are trying herbal anxiety remedies as an alternative. So which ones are best? Well here is my top 5.

  1. The first is the most tried and tested our old friend St John’s Wort. St John’s Wort has been trialed many times and has been shown to be equal to that of conventional antidepressants when taken over a 60 day period. Some countries such as Germany actually prescribe this herb for stress, mainly in teenagers where antidepressants can cause suicidal tendencies (another lovely side effect).
  2. At number two a relatively new entry is passion flower or sometime called caeruela. This has been used since the ancient Aztecs to treat everything from shingles to the menopause. It works similar to that of a sedative.
  3. In at three is Valerian. This herb has been used for centuries and it main effect is a sedative effect. Can be effectively used to treat insomnia too. This herb can be used in conjunction with St John’s Wort for a really great herbal remedy guaranteed to ease panic attack at night and generally help you to deal with stress.
  4. Feverfew is at 4. This can be a great herb especially if you get a lot of headaches and migraines that are associated with stress and anxiety. Works by inhibiting the release of serotonin in the brain. And contains a relatively large amount of melatonin which brings about the good feelings in the brain.
  5. lastly but certainly not least is Skullcap, This herb is certainly one of the least know to treat anxiety and stress but I think that is a bit unjustified as it is extremely potent. It helps promote a good night’s sleep and can help with nighttime panic attacks. This is definitely worthy of a bit more research.

These top 5 are by no means the only herbs available for stress and anxiety I can think of at least 10 more but I will write about them another time. The top 5 you should definitely look into if you are feeling stressed and would like a natural alternative to help. And also you can mix most of these herbs together for some outstanding results, but to be hones this is best left to someone who knows. Please if you would like to find out more, go to your local herbalist they can advice you on exactly how much and what to take specifically for you.

Please remember that these are just my personal opinions and if you are on any prescription medicine to check with your doctor before undertaking any herbal treatment.

Herbal Remedies For Anxiety That Really Do Work

By Anne Thibault

If you suffer from anxiety, you know how it can take over your life and leave you feeling scared and powerless. Using herbal remedies for anxiety is one way to help gain control of your life again, but how do you know which remedies actually work and aren’t harmful for your health?

Most herbal remedies are designed to relax you and reduce your feelings of anxiety. These herbs are safe for most healthy people, but of course you would want to check with your doctor before taking them.

Why Herbal Remedies For Anxiety Are Better

Anxiety has a way of feeding on itself. You probably find that you are nervous a lot (even when there is no reason to be) because you are afraid of your next anxiety attack. This nervousness actually feeds on itself and can bring on an attack.

Now, there are pharmaceuticals that you can take to help calm you down, but these have bad side effects and can cost a lot of money. For people who want a healthier option, herbal remedies can be a great way to go.

Not only are herbal remedies healthier, but they also cost less, are not habit forming and don’t require repeated trips to the doctor in order to continue using them.

What Are The Best Herbal Remedies?

Usually, herbal remedies for anxiety are not tested medically or in clinical trials, but a couple of the herbs below have actually shown promise in trials.

Valerian is an herb that has actually been medically tested and has shown to reduce anxiety in clinical trials.

L-theanine This is actually an amino acid which is derived from Green Tea and has a significant anti-anxiety effect and some say it works as good as prescription anti anxiety medication but without the side effects and addicting qualities.

Chamomile has long been used to treat stress and help calm nerves. It is also great as a sleep aid and for an upset stomach.

St. Johns Wort This herb is actually a natural reuptake inhibitor which has been used since ancient times to improve mood and help with nervousness.

Why Herbal Remedies Will Not Cure You

Using herbal remedies for anxiety is a great way to take the edge of and lessen your overall nervousness, however they will never make your anxiety go away forever!

In order to get rid of anxiety once and for all, you need to stop the cycle of anxiety that happens inside your head. This can’t be done with drugs or herbs but requires a certain technique (thankfully, this is easy to learn). Once you learn how to stop the cycle of fear, you will never have to worry about dealing with anxiety attacks again because you simply won’t have them anymore!

Stress relieving teas:

Green tea as well as chamomile tea both have very strong calming and sedative properties. Chamomile is a flowering plant which has been used for centuries in Europe and Asia for its medicinal properties. It has anti inflammatory properties and has been used for a wide range of problems, but one of its most important benefits is its tranquilizing effects. The active ingredient in Chamomile called Apigenin, is responsible for its sedative and anti-anxiety powers. Sipping chamomile tea has been clinically proven to have a significant effect on mild anxiety and stress.

Green tea is another plant which has gotten a lot of exposure over the years for its healing properties. It is packed with anti oxidants and other powerful properties. Green tea although it contains caffeine also has a very calming effect on those who drink it. Myself included! Although it has a calming for people suffering stress and mild anxiety it is not recommended for people with chronic anxiety.

Other powerful herbs:

Valerian and St. John’s Wort have been shown to have sedative, anti-anxiety and anti- depressant properties. St. John’s Wort is a herb which is primarily used in the treatment of depression, however studies indicate that it may also have an effect on general anxiety. Valerian is a perennial flowering plant which may affect the same brain pathways as anti-anxiety drugs like Xanax (known as benzodiazepines). When used together can both offer relief from mild anxiety and its symptoms.
